The Cape Getaway Show taking place this weekend!

Thank you Las Paletas!! Last week I received info about the Cape Getaway Show 2016 and although camping is one of my ultimate favourite down-time activities, due to a commitment-filled week and weekend I didn’t give it much thought.

Yesterday I entered a competition with Las Paletas purely because the tickets came with free icecream ALL day… and I won! Free icecream is enough to put an event into the diary, so I’ve cleared my schedule for tomorrow and heading off to Lourensford Estate for a day out in the country with my 7 year old son. He won’t believe his luck when he’s allowed more than one icecream in a day 🙂

The line-up sounds pretty interesting, so if you’re thinking of heading out that way this weekend, here’s the info  (provided by KLPR)…

Don’t miss out on the Cape Getaway S...

The Food Crew – an article for Your Baby magazine in 2010

A recent post on Mommy Mall Cape Town’s Facebook page reminded me of this article I wrote for Your Baby Magazine in 2010.  To tell you the truth, the idea for the article came about because I wanted to interview other moms in business to gain insight into being a mompreneur.  I was actually very surprised when the editor accepted my proposal!

Here is the article as I submitted it – nearly double the length of words that I had been allocated, however Your Baby printed it with very little editing (including using my proposed title).  Grab a cup of tea – the length of this article breaks all the rules of writing a blog post….

Experiencing Dash Restaurant’s Winter Menu

“Tonight we’re going to have food put on the plate by an interior decorator,” my dad quips to my mum and I last Sunday afternoon, “we better have dinner before we go out.” Nonsense, I tell him, I’ve looked at Dash’s winter menu and there’s ‘pan fried loin of venison, parsley mash and carrot puree’ as an option, that sounds filling enough.

I’ve been invited to visit Dash Restaurant at the Queen Victoria Hotel on the border of Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront. I’m taking my mom, as August is her birthday month and she deserves a treat. My mum comes in a pair, so we’re taking my dad along. He also deserves a treat.

The sky is displaying a spectacular sunset that Cape Town offers as an apology for some rather dismal weather in winter...

Hot Potato Blogger Challenge Recipe: Potato and Bacon Bake topped with Parmesan Mash

Serves 6 to 8

A recipe for the true potato lover, equally as delicious as a vegetarian meal with the bacon omitted. This is a rich dish with a potato bake filling which is topped with a cheesy mash potato. It can be the star of the show, or served as a side dish at a buffet. Depending on the size of your potatoes, you may need more cream. Be sure to cook the potatoes on the stove top until they release some of their starch and thicken the cream, this results in a much creamier bake.

Flavour Combination:

For the bake –

2 tbsp olive oil

1 red onion, finely diced

125g bacon, finely chopped

250ml whipping cream

8 to 12 large potatoes, peeled and sliced (using a food processor or mandolin slicer)

Seasoning, to taste

For the topping –

6 to 8 large potatoes, peeled and quartered

50g parmesan ...

Hot Potato Blogger Challenge Recipe: Baked Smoked Salmon Trout and Courgette Croquettes

Serves 4 to 6

This is a good recipe for a breakfast, brunch or dinner party starter. The croquettes are baked, so they can all be cooked in one batch. It is a good idea to bake them on silicone or baking paper to prevent them sticking. They can be made ahead of time up to coating with the cheese mixture, refrigerated for a few hours, then cooked just before serving.

Flavour Combination:

½ cup cheddar cheese, finely grated

¼ cup ground almonds

¼ cup desiccated coconut

2 cups cooked potato, peeled and mashed

80g smoked salmon trout ribbons, finely chopped

4 to 6 baby courgettes, grated

himalayan salt, to taste

2 eggs, beaten

fresh rocket, to garnish (optional)

To make:

  1. Preheat oven to 180*c
  2. Mix together the cheddar cheese, ground almonds and desiccated coconut, set aside.
  3. Mix the smo...

Hot Potato Blogger Challenge – A tribute to my potato-loving dad!

I would love to win with the Hot Potato Blogger Challenge because… well, should I start with what I would do with the prize money, why I think my recipes are fabulous, or first tell you why I entered?

I think I will begin with telling you why I entered. Potatoes are such a great ingredient to work with, they are so versatile and can be used for a quick light meal, to being a side dish for a posh affair, or even the main affair itself. Potatoes are getting a bad rap from the low carb protagonists, but they will always have their place on the menu. Especially my dad’s menu. The minute I heard about this potato challenge, I thought of my dad, who is a meat and potatoes kind of guy...

The Good Food and Wine Show with my ‘mini me’

It’s so close I can almost taste it – this weekend my favourite annual foodie event opens at the Cape Town International Convention Centre. The Good Food & Wine Show runs from 21 to 24 May 2015 and brings to us a feast of flavours and edible experiences.

In the decade or more that The Good Food & Wine Show has been dazzling us with the collective consciousness of culinary minds, the show has had different meaning for me. In my mid 20s I was somewhat dragged around the expo by well-meaning parents. A little later in life I found out that the GF&WS is rather a festive meeting place to sample a fair amount of wine with friends. As a chef student in my early 30s I worked behind the scenes and discovered the hard working wheel that keeps an event of this magnitude turning...

A Grand Day Out – the 2015 South African Cheese Festival

Two of my favourite animated characters are Wallace and Gromit. I have no doubt that this is because of our mutual love for one of the foods of the Gods – cheese! In A Grand Day Out, after discovering that there is no cheese in the house, Wallace and Gromit build a spaceship to take them to the moon because “everybody knows the moon’s made of cheese”.

If you are in the southern Western Cape this weekend you won’t have to travel to the moon to experience the joy of cheese. From the 25th to the 27th of April 2015 the 14th annual South African Cheese Festival is being held at Sandringham Farm in Stellenbosch. At the time of writing, on the eve of the event, tickets are sold out for both the Saturday and the Sunday...
