My kitchen at home has the makings of a yacht’s galley, a galley on a very small sailing boat. It’s neat, clean and functional; but when I cook in it I can do a 3 step dance between the stove, prep area and sink. The kitchen pictured here is not my kitchen!
This kitchen belongs to the Big Bay Beach House, a luxury holiday home on the water’s edge in Big Bay with a heavenly view of Table Mountain from across the bay. A home that has been featured in the likes of Property Magazine. A far cry from my humble abode.
One of the highlights of being a Personal Chef is the opportunity to cook in a dream kitchen (ok, my dream kitchen). The Big Bay Beach House was customed built to the owners’ specifications – they love family life and entertaining and the outdoors, and this is evident in every aspect of the design of the property. If there is a “perfect kitchen” competition out there, then this kitchen would be a strong contestant for first place. It is designed for efficiency – a blessing when one is preparing food for a large number of guests. There are ample granite surfaces in the kitchen and scullery. The stove has 4 gas hobs and 2 electric plates, the oven works amazingly and a steam oven can prepare a large amount of healthy vegetables in less than 10 mins. There are 2 dishwashers and 4 sinks. There are at least 2 large fridges and 3 freezers. All the appliances are Miele (I told you this was my dream kitchen!). And there is more than enough storage space for the collection of Le Crueset casseroles, Scanpan pots and pans and Wüstof Knives (And now this is your dream kitchen too, right?).
But with great power comes great responsibility! The role of a Personal Chef is not just about the food we provide, I always endeavor to take great care with my clients’ resources – from the managing of the float, to the use of the water, gas and electricity, to keeping their kitchen appliances and utensils in the best condition and in their correct place. Perhaps it is about fitting into the clients’ environment just like another appliance, but one with a smile.
A major pro of my transition from luxury yachts to landbased spaces has been that I still get the glorious views while I am working, without the preparation area constantly moving under foot! At Big Bay Beach House you feel as if you are part of the dunes and the ocean, immersed in a bubble of luxurious simplicity – how many people can say that about their workplace?
I look forward to my future days of work at the Big Bay Beach House and meeting the guests who vacation there. Please contact me to chat about The Food Crew’s affordable Personal Chef Service – we look forward to cooking for you!
